Post-doctoral Research Associate Position

Applications are invited for a Research Associate/Postdoctoral position in Numerical Relativity at the University of Maryland, College Park, contingent on funding, starting in the Fall of 2008 or as early as the Spring of 2008. The successful candidate will be working with the Center for Scientific Computation and Mathematical Modeling (CSCAMM) as well as the Maryland Gravitation Theory group at the Physics Department. The applicant will benefit from accessing and interacting with these two groups under the supervision of Dr. Manuel Tiglio.

CSCAMM's primary goal is to foster research activity that highlights the interplay between novel computational algorithms and mathematical modeling. CSCAMM sponsors an active visitors program through a series of seminars, lectures and workshops. It supports an educational program with a series of tutorials and courses, and is actively involved with the Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation graduate program at UMD (http://www.amsc.umd.edu). CSCAMM is equipped with an access grid node that can be used for nationwide, multipoint real time video collaborations. More at http://www.cscamm.umd.edu/.

The Maryland Gravitation Group has participated since the 1960s in the exciting development of the subject of General Relativity Theory. The discovery of this theory by Einstein in 1915 involved far reaching insights on the nature of gravity and the dynamical structure of space and time. General Relativity has come to play a central role in understanding the most energetic astrophysical processes in the universe, the history and dynamics of the cosmos as a whole, and in the puzzles that lie today at the frontiers of fundamental physics. The research areas include Classical Gravity, Gravitational Waves, Numerical Relativity, Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetime, Early Universe Cosmology, Black Hole Thermodynamics, Condensed Matter Analogs and Quantum Gravity. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a statement of research interests, and also make arrangements to have three letters of recommendation. All the material should be sent by email to

The deadline for full consideration is December 1, 2007.

Maryland is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
