Nonlinear dynamics near unstable vortex sheets and vortex patches

Dr. Yan Guo

Mathematics at Brown University

Abstract:   In this talk, we present characterizations of nonlinear dynamics near unstable vortex sheets with surface tension (Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities), as well as near unstable Kirchhoff ellipses. We demonstrate that such nonlinear dynamics is governed by the correspondingleading linear growing mode(s) for general perturbations, within the time scale for which the instabilities occur.
