Multiscale Modeling of Microstructural Pattern Formation

Professor Alain Karma

Northeastern University

Abstract:   In this talk, I will give an overview of progress made to link atomistic and continuum scale simulations to predict the anisotropic properties and evolution of internal solid-liquid and solid-solid interfaces that shape the complex microstructures of structural materials.

The example of orientation selection in dendritic evolution will be used to highlight the successes and challenges of this multiscale modeling effort, which has been carried out to a large degee collaboratively within a DOE funded Computational Materials Science Network during the past few years.
