Modeling and analysis of material surfaces: Where do atoms go and why?

Complex crystal surfaces are building blocks of modern devices. In this talk, I will discuss recent progress and open challenges in describing surface properties across length and time scales by methods of applied mathematics and theoretical physics. The grand challenge in this context is to relate the motion of atoms (at small scales) with surface morphologies at large scales.
