Signatures of kicked disks and mass loss

Cole Miller

University of Maryland

Abstract:   The merger of comparable-mass black holes releases a few percent of the mass-energy in gravitational waves, and can lead to a final black hole that moves at tens to thousands of kilometers per second relative to the original binary center of mass. An accretion disk around the binary will feel these effects, possibly leading to electromagnetic signatures. I will summarize some of the suggestions for these signatures, and will feature recent MHD simulations of mass loss.
