Thermodynamics of Accretion in the Vicinity of Black Holes

Julian Krolik

Johns Hopkins University

Abstract:   Since the recognition that angular momentum transport in accretion disks is due to MHD turbulence stirred by the magneto-rotational instability, there has been tremendous progress in understanding accretion dynamics. Comparatively less effort has been expended on accretion thermodynamics, despite its direct connection to observable properties. In this talk I will review some recent work in this area, including the dynamical influence of radiation pressure, the link between MHD turbulence and variability in the light output (including relativistic modulation), and emissivity near the ISCO.
