Three-Dimensional GRMHD Simulations of Accretion Disks around Spinning Black Holes

Ramesh Narayan

Harvard University

Abstract:   We describe global 3D GRMHD simulations of steady accretion disks around black holes. We have simulated models with a range of disk thicknesses and black hole spin parameters, both with and without a simplified radiative cooling prescription. As the disk thickness and/or the black hole spin increases, the inner regions of our simulated disks deviate increasingly from the idealized thin disk model of Novikov and Thorne (1973). We discuss implications for attempts to measure spin parameters of black holes by modeling the radiation emitted by their accretion disks.
