Toward Self-Similar Collapse of Alpha Patches

Charles Fefferman

                                            Department of Mathematics, Princeton University

Abstract:   Numerical work of Cordoba et al (see below) gives strong evidence of a self similar collapse for the analogue of vortex patches, with the QG-alpha equation in place of 2D Euler. The talk reviews this work, and explains a plan to give a rigorous computer-assisted proof (joint work with A and D Cordoba, Fontelos and Mancho). The rigorous work is at an early stage.
